Tour de Saunders

Back in 1950, my grandparents Ron and Irene Saunders, cycled from Dieppe to Nice in France. This was no mean feat in itself, but they actually cycled it on a tandem with homemade panniers constructed out of wood. Along the way they kept a diary detailing the route, the food and the prices, and so, in June 2023 I set off to retrace their journey. I had expected long days on the bike fuelled by pastry and steak. What I hadn’t expected was to connect with my grandparents and my family and find a sense of belonging I’d been missing. With the support of Salsa Cycles, Ortlieb gear, Lyon Cycle and IRIS clothing, I documented the journey in both the images you see below and in a film that is under construction right now. You can read more about it on IRIS’s website here.
